Delah Coffee Introduces Yemeni Coffee Culture to San Francisco
A Yemeni coffee house filled with cinnamon and cardamom has established a distinct presence in SoMa.
Delah Coffee, founded by Majed Mohamed alongside co-owner Omar Alkhameri, introduces traditional Yemeni coffee culture to San Francisco through both flavor and ritual.
The team operates Delah as a growing concept, with seven locations across the U.S., including two in San Francisco. In SoMa, they bring a format that blends cultural storytelling with everyday routine, expanding awareness of Yemeni coffee traditions through a more accessible, neighborhood setting.
Named after the traditional Yemeni coffee pot known as the “delah,” the cafe is built around both education and atmosphere. Inside, guests encounter not just drinks, but a deeper story of coffee’s origins—tracing its journey from Ethiopia to Yemen and outward through the historic port of Mokha.
The menu centers on spiced coffee traditions. Drinks arrive infused with cardamom and cinnamon, including a signature Yemeni latte that delivers warmth and depth without excessive sweetness. Some coffees are served in traditional pots kept warm over a flame, encouraging a slower, shared experience. Alongside, pastries like fatayer and honey-topped desserts offer a mix of savory and sweet rooted in Middle Eastern baking.
Delah draws a steady mix of visitors who settle in for hours, using the space as both a gathering point and a place to slow down. The cafe’s extended hours reinforce that role, staying open late into the evening—until 11 PM most nights and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays—offering a rare neighborhood setting for coffee, conversation, or quiet work well beyond the typical café schedule.
The team approaches Delah as an extension of home—one that welcomes a broad community while introducing something culturally specific and intentional.
As SoMa continues to evolve, spaces like this expand the neighborhood’s daily rhythm—bringing global traditions into a local setting and broadening what a coffee experience can be.
