Vinyl, Books, and Coffee: The SF Trio Keeping Culture Analog

A coffee shop rooted in music and literature is creating a new kind of gathering place in SoMa West. Cafe Suspiro, led by Raul Sanchez, brings together coffee, vinyl records, and books into one cohesive concept shaped by personal history and neighborhood familiarity.

Sanchez returned to the same address where he started as the first barista at Vega Coffee more than a decade ago and built something of his own. He set out to create a space that balances records, coffee, and books—a “holy trinity” that reflects both his background in music and his connection to the community. He named the cafe after his grandfather’s small shop in Colotlán, Mexico, a name that translates to a quiet sense of relief.

Inside, visitors browse a growing collection of new and used records alongside music-focused and locally authored books. The shop buys and sells vinyl, keeping the selection in constant rotation. Sanchez shapes a coffee menu that stays straightforward while introducing drinks like a Mexican mocha and horchata latte.

He extends the concept beyond the counter by hosting events and conversations with writers. Guests gather to listen, read, and engage, turning the space into an active cultural setting rather than a single-purpose cafe.

Cafe Suspiro keeps a steady neighborhood rhythm, opening Monday through Thursday from 8 to 4, Friday from 8 to 3, and Saturday from 9 to 3, with in-store pickup available. Located in SoMa West, it reflects a quieter layer of the district—one built on independent ideas and daily consistency.

As SoMa continues to evolve, spaces like this show how culture grows through intention, where coffee, music, and books come together as part of everyday life.
