An Arts Hub Shaping SoMa
Root Division has been connecting creativity and community since 2002. Founded to support Bay Area artists with affordable studios, exhibition opportunities, and real teaching experience, the organization operates on a unique model: artists receive workspace in exchange for community service.
Over the years, Root Division has provided studios for 220 artists, delivered 7,000+ hours of free youth classes, hosted courses for more than 3,000 adults, and exhibited work by more than 3,500 artists. Root Division, based in SoMa, remains a vital cultural anchor — an example of how artist-driven infrastructure contributes to the neighborhood’s ongoing transformation.
Located at 1131 Mission Street, San Francisco, Root Division sits in the heart of SoMa’s arts corridor, surrounded by studios, galleries, and creative nonprofits that have long helped shape the district’s cultural identity. The organization operates a gallery space that hosts rotating exhibitions throughout the year, along with classrooms and artist studios that support a growing community of local artists.
Beyond exhibitions, Root Division’s programs extend into art education and professional development. Youth programs provide free art classes to students across San Francisco, while adult workshops, artist talks, and public events invite the broader community to participate in the creative process.
Together, these initiatives reinforce Root Division’s role not only as a place where art is made, but as a platform where artists teach, mentor, and connect with the neighborhood around them—ensuring that creativity remains a defining part of SoMa’s evolving story.
